"what do you represent?"
Friday, January 13

It's ironic that a phrase which was previously frequently used as a form of mockery unknowingly became something that I asked myself constantly, a means through which I could keep myself in check and search my soul. Indeed, with her bared teeth and imploring eyes, Ms PSK's simple question, "What do you represent?" was something that accompanied me through my IB years, and certainly for the better.

I guess, in a sense, the highly memorable circumstances under which the question was posed served to engrave its message even deeper in my heart. Back in Year4, I repeated those same words with a tone of mockery and spite, in an attempt to hide how those words truly grated on my heart. The thing is, back then, I had no clue at all how to answer the question, and that made me nervous enough to make my palms sweat --- or at least, sweat more than usual. A question with simple words, yes; but a weighty one nonetheless.

Over the years, I sought to find the answer. I knew in my heart what the answer should have been, and strived to make it a reality. No longer did I want my opinions and actions to be a result of the influence of those around me. Rather, I wanted to be an individual who acted and thought according to his own beliefs and virtues. I picked up values along the way --- values which I held, and still hold myself accountable to in Christ. In many situations, and even when a .9er would mockingly pose the same question, I'd be reminded of the goal to which I wanted to work towards, and thus keep my actions and thoughts in check. I became confident of my identity as an individual, and as a child of God. While I am still continually being moulded into the man that God wants me to be, I am certain that I am much closer to it now than I was before, and for that reason I am proud.

So, what do I represent? I represent Christ, my Lord and Saviour. And in doing so, I choose to:

Now then, what do you represent?

AMEN;
